Latest Project: History in Colour — Patterns, Pigments & Prints. A long-term documentary project on the heritage craft of Indian block printing. Photographed in print studios, where artisans create intricate designs using natural dyes and organic textiles. History in Colour traces the rhythm, meditative qualities, beauty, and cultural knowledge passed through generations. This project started in 2016 and expanded during returns in 2023–24; the work continues with Louw’s upcoming trip to India in 2025.

The environment as a living archive:

Elements of Nature : A developing body of work by Lizane Louw.

Elements of Nature is an ongoing visual investigation into climate emergencies, ecological change, and the shifting relationship between people and the natural world.

History in Colour is a continuing study of ancestral craft practices shaped by natural pigments, mud, minerals, climate, and ecology. This ongoing research reveals how environmental knowledge is preserved through material culture.

Artisans work in a traditional block printing workshop in India, soaking and dyeing fabrics in large vats and water baths. Block printing and dyeing involve multiple steps, including preparing the cloth, printing and dyeing it with various colours, washing it, and ensuring the dye is set. Each stage requires meticulous attention and skill, highlighting the artisans' dedication and expertise. This vibrant and labour-intensive craft is integral to India's rich textile heritage.
